How does flash rust form?
Flash rust is usually not a material defect but is caused by external rust particles that settle on a surface. Especially with stainless steel, small iron particles from external sources can land on the material and create visible rust spots.
Typical causes of flash rust
A common cause is contact with rusting metal objects. This includes damaged items, lower-grade steels, or already corroded metal surfaces. These can release tiny rust particles that adhere to stainless steel or other metals.
Cleaning and storage together
Flash rust can also occur when products are cleaned or stored together with rust-prone materials. Fine iron particles can be transferred and settle on the surface, where they oxidize when exposed to moisture.
Moisture as a contributing factor
Water, high humidity, and standing moisture promote the formation of flash rust. The rust particles adhere more easily and become visible as small brown or reddish spots. However, this does not necessarily mean that the product itself is corroding.
Important to know
Flash rust usually remains on the surface only and can often be removed easily. Depending on the product, a soft cloth, vinegar, citric acid, or a specialized stainless steel cleaner can be used. This typically restores the surface quickly.
